Title: Towards New Perspective On Stochastic Optimization: Bridging Theory and Practice

A bstract: Optimization theory is a cornerstone of machine learning. At the core of training deep neural networks lies the optimization of a loss function. However, despite the success of widely-used empirical optimizers and advancements in theoretical frame works, a notable gap between theory and practice remains. This gap often arises from theoretical assumptions that do not reflect real-world conditions.

This thesis addresses these discrepancies through two main studies. The first study focuses on optimization algorithms with differential privacy guarantees, highlighting the challenges and adaptations required to maintain privacy without compromising efficiency. It introduces online-to-batch style reduction frameworks that convert online convex optimization (OCO) algorithms into private optimization algorithms applicable under varying convexity and smoothness conditions.

The second study delves into non-smooth non-convex optimization by introducing a new convergence criterion that relaxes the standard notion of the Goldstein stationary point. It also proposes a reduction framework that converts OCO algorithms into stochastic optimization algorithms suitable for non-smooth non-convex scenarios. This framework notably proves the convergence of stochastic gradient descent with momentum (SGDM) under these conditions.

Together, these studies deepen our understanding of optimization by developing new theories that better reflect practical conditions and address realistic needs, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Abstract:GPCRs are one of the most widely studied groups of proteins. There are over 800 unique GPCRs in the human genome, interacting with many types of extracellular signals including photons, protons, lipids, peptides, and hormones. With such a great number of GPCRs interacting with so many signals, they are involved in most physiological processes in the body, and thus also associated with disease if they are dysregulated. The large body of research into the GPCR family of receptors has established what defines a GPCR—their structure, their localization, and their signaling mechanisms. Yet, in the GPCR family tree, there exist outliers, understudied because standard assays for measuring GPCR activity are not suitable for one of many reasons: they may lack conventional G protein coupling, signal through non-canonical mediators, or function primarily as intracellular receptors rather than at the plasma membrane. Here, we resolve the structure and mechanism of one of these dogma-defying GPCRs in GPR143. Mutation of this receptor causes the disease ocular albinism, and dysregulation of its expression is also linked to several cancers. There are many peculiarities about GPR143—it localizes internally to melanosomes, many functional motifs found in GPCRs show a marked divergence in GPR143, and the nature of its native ligand and signaling mechanism remain controversial. To dissect these peculiarities, we combined cryo-electron microscopy with high-throughput cell signaling BRET assays and unbiased interactome analysis to comprehensively examine the structure, mechanism, function, and molecular pathogenesis of GPR143. We reveal the unique seven-transmembrane structure of GPR143, in which its own N-terminus occupies the canonical orthosteric binding pocket found in GPCRs. We demonstrate that the N-terminus auto-activates the receptor, allowing for constitutive β-arrestin recruitment rather than G protein activation. Next, using APEX proximity labeling, we discover a noncanonical protein that pairs with GPR143 in HPS1, which is also implicated in albinism disorders. Finally, we begin to dissect the mechanism of action of GPR143, looking at the interplay between β-arrestins and HPS1. This characterization of GPR143 challenges not only previous findings on the receptor, but also canonical knowledge about GPCRs as a whole.

TITLE: Chemical Principles for Engineering Properties of Single-Molecule Circuits

ABSTRACT: Since the pioneering proposal by Aviram and Ratner to use donor-bridge-acceptor molecular systems as active circuit elements, known as “molecular rectifiers”, the field of molecular electronics has advanced rapidly. Over the past few decades, numerous intriguing electronic properties associated with single molecules have been demonstrated. Much of this progress is driven by experimental techniques such as break-junction (BJ) methods, which enable precise characterization and manipulation of charge transport at the nanoscale. In these approaches, metal-molecule junctions are repeatedly formed by allowing molecules to self-assemble between two metallic electrodes, and the conductance is analyzed in a statistically meaningful manner under ambient or other conditions.Integrating inorganic materials, such as coordination complexes with tunable charge states, into nanoscale electronic junctions enables access to a broader spectrum of transport phenomena by introducing additional spin degrees of freedom. These emergent properties are central to the development of advanced spin-based technologies, including single-molecule qubits, spin valves, and molecular memory devices. However, significant challenges remain, as conventionally ex situ synthesized coordination compounds often disassemble upon contact with electrode surfaces, hindering their direct electrical characterization. To overcome this limitation, an in situ assembly approach has been developed to construct quasi-one-dimensional (1D) coordination wires within junctions using organic ligands, where metal atoms are incorporated from the external environment during junction elongation. Here, I show that the electron density distribution over the ligands is a decisive factor governing robust coordination wire assembly, and demonstrate that the identity of the metal centers can be extended to other species through electrochemical control, thereby yielding junctions with distinct conductance properties.Single-molecule conductance measurements of a series of diradical wires featuring uniquely constrained anchor groups are also presented. Our results provide experimental evidence that radical-electrode coupling can significantly affect conductance trends with increasing molecular length. In particular, strong electronic coupling can attenuate the previously reported anti-ohmic behavior in radical systems, where conductance increases with molecular length. Overall, this thesis establishes chemical principles that govern robust junction assembly and electron transport behavior, highlighting how linker and molecular design and interfacial electronic coupling can be leveraged to tailor the functionalities of molecular circuits.

Reiki: A Practitioner’s Reflections on Intuition, Healing, and Service

As a certified Reiki practitioner, I’ve discovered that even in a world where we often feel stuck, overwhelmed, or at a loss for how to help, there is always a way to be of service. Through working with people in person and remotely across the nation and globe, I’ve witnessed how energy work can create a deep sense of ease - clearing mental fog and allowing individuals to safely reflect, release, and reconnect with themselves. From supporting those experiencing pregnancy, surgery recovery, or emotional distress to offering care in spaces like yoga studios, churches, and everyday moments, I’ve seen how healing can happen anywhere.

This talk explores how Reiki has expanded my intuitive awareness, teaching me to better sense what others need while honoring consent and energetic boundaries. I’ll share how this practice has shaped my understanding of grounding, emotional release, and protecting one’s energy. More than anything, it reveals how healing isn’t about fixing - but about offering space for people to feel seen, safe, and empowered to thrive.

More Than Words: Why America Needs a Multilingual Mindset

In a time of deep division and global uncertainty, the ability to understand one another has never been more urgent. Yet in the United States, where millions of people speak more than one language, multilingualism is often undervalued or overlooked.

This talk explores why learning another language is about far more than vocabulary and grammar—it’s about building empathy. Drawing on data about how many Americans speak multiple languages, where and how they learned them, and why others don’t, this talk reveals a surprising gap between the linguistic diversity we have and the potential we’re not yet realizing.

Through personal insight and reflection, we’ll examine how language learning shapes the way we see others—and ourselves. More importantly, we’ll explore what we can do to foster a more multilingual, empathetic society: from rethinking education to embracing the languages already around us.

The Room I Needed: Why Healing Requires Space

In many communities, strength is celebrated, but emotional honesty is often neglected. This is especially true for Black men, who are frequently expected to carry pain without ever being given space to process it.

This talk explores the concept of “the room we needed but never had”, a space where vulnerability, faith, and mental health are not in conflict, but in conversation. Through personal insight and cultural reflection, Antonio challenges us to consider what healing actually requires, and what becomes possible when we finally create space for ourselves and others.

The Both-And Life

For much of my life, I interpreted myself through extremes: if I succeeded, I felt secure; if I made a mistake, I questioned my worth. As a first-generation, international student shaped by responsibility, ambition, and perfectionism, I know how easy it is to let one difficult moment speak louder than an entire journey. In this talk, I reflect on how either-or thinking quietly shapes the way many of us understand failure, identity, and belonging.

I share how embracing a both-and paradigm has transformed the way I live: I can be capable and still growing, grateful and still struggling, ambitious and still in need of rest. Rather than letting mistakes define me, I am learning to hold the fuller truth of who I am. Through this personal reflection, I invite the audience to reconsider the stories they tell themselves and to discover how growth, healing, and wholeness begin when we stop reducing our lives to extremes.

Small Changes, Big Picture: Why Practical Sustainability Starts With You

During my first year of college, I found myself very frustrated by how little space there was in my dorm room, barely enough for the two people supposed to live there. The bulky laundry detergent and personal care products took up almost all of my shelf space.

I started researching more compact, college-friendly products and stumbled upon the sustainable alternatives. Throughout this, I discovered alarming statistics about plastic pollution and overconsumption that I could no longer ignore, especially when seeing the effects on my campus.

Over the next four years, I’ve worked to swap out my everyday products for the sustainable version, discovering that not only did I save space in my dorm room, but was also saving myself money. I wanted to teach people about my research, my changed perspective and how even the smaller everyday choices we make, have a big impact.

In the U.S, overconsumption is a big part of our culture and the detrimental environmental effects are often overlooked, even if it is directly impacting our health and society as a whole. In this talk, I want to teach people about the importance of the small, practical, sustainable swaps, shifting towards a more reusable and circular mindset.

The Politics of Being Alone

The immigrant community shows us time and time again how difficult it is to live in America. For them, assimilation feels like betrayal and legal status a target on their backs. My family came here with nothing, yet I watched them build fruitful lives based in community.

Children of immigrants, particularly those in higher education, face a different challenge: trying to make all of those sacrifices worthwhile. We leave our homes, go to college and networking events, and we do it all alone. Phone calls to home become shorter, the more we climb the less relatability we have to those who raised us. This is what fuels modern assimilation. It’s not the erasure of language or history like those before us experienced, but the politics of being alone.

Abstract:Ascending neuromodulatory systems, including the cholinergic basal forebrain and the noradrenergic locus coeruleus, are active in every conscious brain and exert direct effects on both neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow. Despite their ubiquity, the spatial organization of neuromodulatory signals at the mesoscale and their influence on the neurovascular coupling (NVC) relationship underlying blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI remain poorly understood. Misattributing neuromodulation-driven hemodynamic changes to local neuronal activity represents a fundamental confound for neuroimaging studies of cognition, arousal, and disease. An open source, widefield mesoscope was built for simultaneous two-color fluorescence and two-channel reflectance imaging on a single sCMOS detector, enabling concurrent measurement of GRAB sensors for acetylcholine (ACh) and norepinephrine (NE), neuronal calcium (jRGECO1a), and oxy-/deoxyhemoglobin in awake, head-fixed mice. A separate platform was developed to enable simultaneous BOLD fMRI and widefield fluorescence imaging at 9.4T using a custom MR-compatible fiber-optic bundle. Visual stimulation drives spatially structured, retinotopically organized ACh release in primary visual cortex, challenging the prevailing model of purely diffuse cholinergic broadcast signaling. NE, but not ACh, is a critical second determinant of hemodynamics: incorporating NE alongside neuronal calcium as a regressor dramatically improves hemodynamic prediction accuracy (r = 0.59 ± 0.03 vs. 0.32 ± 0.02 for calcium alone). Arousal-driven NE release causes region-specific vasoconstriction that reduces hemodynamic functional connectivity without corresponding changes in neuronal calcium coherence. Simultaneous BOLD fMRI and widefield imaging in awake mice reveals that neuronal calcium leads both BOLD and pupil dilation, while a hemodynamic impulse response function of widefield neuronal calcium data predicts cortical BOLD with limited accuracy (r = 0.15). Neuromodulatory state, particularly noradrenergic tone, is a significant, spatially heterogeneous determinant of cortical hemodynamics that cannot be ignored in hemodynamic brain imaging. The tools, datasets, and quantitative frameworks developed here provide a foundation for more mechanistic interpretation of BOLD fMRI signals in terms of their underlying neural and neuromodulatory origins.

Title: Linear Methods for Dimensionality Reduction: is there life beyond PCA?

Abstract: Feature extraction and selection at the presence of nonlinear dependencies among the data is a fundamental challenge in unsupervised learning. We propose using a Gram-Schmidt (GS) type orthogonalization process over function spaces to detect and map out such dependencies. Specifically, by applying the GS process over some family of functions, we construct a series of covariance matrices that can either be used to identify new large-variance directions, or to remove those dependencies from known directions. In the former case, we provide information-theoretic guarantees in terms of entropy reduction. In the latter, we provide precise conditions by which the chosen function family eliminates existing redundancy in the data. Each approach provides both a feature extraction and a feature selection algorithm. Our feature extraction methods are linear, and can be seen as natural generalization of principal component analysis (PCA). We provide experimental results for synthetic and real-world benchmark datasets which show superior performance over state-of-the-art (linear) feature extraction and selection algorithms. Surprisingly, our linear feature extraction algorithms are comparable and often outperform several important nonlinear feature extraction methods such as autoencoders, kernel PCA, and UMAP.

Bio: Bruno Sinopoli is the Truet B. Thompson Professor and the Director of School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. Prior to that, he was the Das Family Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Preston M. Green Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St Louis, from 2019 to 2025. Prior to joining Washington University, Prof. Sinopoli was a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University from 2007 to 2019, with courtesy appointments in the Robotics Institute and the Mechanical Engineering Department and co-director of the Smart Infrastructure Institute. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University from 2005 to 2007. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 2003 and 2005, respectively, and his Laurea from the University of Padova in Italy. His research focuses on robust and resilient design of cyber-physical systems, with applications to smart infrastructures, networked and distributed multi-agent control systems, cloud computing, and energy systems.

To coincide with the donation of newly released NSA documents to the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center’s Julius and Ethel Rosenberg Collection, Boston University Libraries, in partnership with the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies and the Boston University School of Law Library and the Rosenberg Fund for Children will host a special event featuring Robert and Michael Meeropol, the Rosenbergs’ sons. They will join filmmaker Ivy Meeropol, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg’s granddaughter, in a screening of her documentary Heir to an Execution, followed by a panel including journalist Clay Risen (Red Scare, Blacklists, McCarthyism, and the Making of Modern America,) biographer Anne Sebba (Ethel Rosenberg: An American Tragedy) and Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights J. Wells Dixon to engage in an in-depth conversation about the case’s complexity. The discussion will explore how this significant archival donation shapes, challenges, or confirms public perceptions of the Rosenberg trial, and the vital role that FOIA requests and archives play in seeking a fuller account of history.

TITLE: Investigating Mass Transport in Temperature Responsive Amine-Infused Hydrogels for Carbon Capture

ABSTRACT: This master's thesis investigates how structural design influences carbon dioxide transport and adsorption-desorption behavior in temperature-responsive amine-infused hydrogels, with particular emphasis on the difference between plain hydrogels and hydrogels featuring microporous structures. The core argument of this work is that the performance of hydrogel sorbents cannot be evaluated solely by equilibrium uptake. In these materials, internal transport pathways, diffusion processes, and chemical reactions play critical roles in determining how rapidly CO2 reaches active sites, how effectively the material is utilized, and how it can be regenerated.This study combines staged COMSOL modeling with a transport-centered comparison between planar and microporous structures. One-dimensional planar reaction-diffusion models first establish the baseline signatures of one-sided CO2 penetration, moving reaction fronts, and species redistribution in unstructured hydrogels. The simulation was then extended to a microporous hydrogel structure to compare CO2 distribution, penetration depth, and transport under different conditions. Microchannel coated with hydrogel on the inner wall was used as a simplified but representative structure for this study. The simulation results show that planar hydrogels are front-limited, whereas the structured hydrogels redistribute access in space: at an equivalent characteristic transport length of 300 μm under the same inlet-outlet pressure, to reach 95% diffusion-reaction completion, the 2D microchannel coated with a 200μm-thick-hydrogel and having a1000 μm outer diameter requires approximately 481s, whereas the 1D planar uniform representative requires about 6750 s, corresponding to an approximately 14 times difference.Experimentally, a crosslinked PNIPAm-co-DMAEMA-co-NTBA thermoresponsive hydrogel, with NIPAm:DMAEMA:NTBA = 70:10:20 wt%, MBAA as the crosslinker, and APS with TEMED as the initiator, was prepared as the material platform. Experiments were performed under 400 ppm CO2 with regeneration at 80 °C through a lab-built DGS system, on structures matched to the simulation dimensions plain cylinder and microchannels coated with a 200-μm-thick hydrogel, both with a 1000-μm outer diameter. Compared with plain hydrogels, microchannel hydrogels exhibited a 6-17% improvement in CO2 capture performance, qualitatively consistent with the transport enhancement suggested by the simulations.Overall, the introduction of micrchannels reduces transport paths, improves gas accessibility, and enhances sorbent performance. Through this combined simulation and experimental study, this thesis establishes a connection between structural design and macroscopic adsorption-desorption performance, providing insights for the design of temperature-responsive amine-infused hydrogel for enhanced direct carbon capture.

Title: Design, Fabrication, and Implementation of a Hi-Fidelity Free-Space Grover-Michelson Interferometer for Super-Resolution Sensing Applications

Abstract: Recent advances in optical interferometry have involved the development of un-biased multiport devices using linear optical components that have the potential to yield significant advancements in sensing capabilities for relatively small increases in size and complexity. The unbiased four port case, titled the “Grover Coin” due to its application in the Grover Quantum Search Algorithm, has been particularly interesting because of its even symmetry across all four ports including back reflections. Previous fabrication attempts of the Grover coin using bulk optical components have already been experimentally shown to be successful in realizing the theoretical potential of the device. However, these versions of the Grover coin still leave a lot of room for improvement in terms of loss, size, and evenness of the splitting ratios. This thesis details the design and fabrication of a novel, compact, free-space “Compact Grover Coin,” with the goal of capitalizing on these improvements and creating a single rigorously characterized device. Additionally, the validity of this device in the laboratory was explored through the creation and characterization of the full three port configuration, as well as the recreation of the Grover-Michelson interferometer.

It highlights the distributive arguments activists have made to access state funding for health care, combating state arguments that funding trans- health care is too specialized, too expensive, and too controversial. Hanssmann situates trans- health as a crucible within which sweeping changes are taking place—with potentially far-reaching effects on the economic and racial barriers to accessing care.

Prema Kurien is professor of sociology at Syracuse University, Daicoff Faculty Scholar and the former director of the South Asian Center. She is a scholar of international migration, race, ethnicity and religion. Kurien adopts a transnational approach in her work and has also done research in India, to show how a variety of global factors, including developments in the country of origin, play a profound role in shaping community structures, cultures and activism profiles of immigrants and even the second generation.

She is the author of three award-winning sole-authored books, Kaleidoscopic Ethnicity: International Migration and the Reconstruction of Community Identities in India (2002), A Place at the Multicultural Table: The Development of an American Hinduism (2007), Ethnic Church Meets Mega Church: Indian American Christianity in Motion (2017) and over 70 other sole-authored publications.

Her new book, Claiming Citizenship: Race, Religion, and Political Mobilization among New Americans was published in January 2025. Her work has been recognized with two career awards, three book awards, five article awards and two teaching awards. She has received postdoctoral fellowships and grants from a wide variety of sources.

The Migration Studies Workshop aims to foster a community of scholars, build networks and promote social science studies of international migration from a range of methodologies and perspectives.

Meli is the author of two cookbooks: Baking an Impact: Small Changes for More Sustainable Baking and Sweet Nature. Outside of the classroom, she volunteers with the Stormville Fire Company Auxiliary and enjoys gardening at her 1800s farmhouse, where she and her husband are raising their son Leonardo.

TITLE: Coupling Electrolysis and Surface Patterning to Improve Onset of Nucleate boiling and Bubble Departure in Pool Boiling Heat transfer

ABSTRACT: This master’s thesis investigates the enhancement of pool boiling heat transfer through the combined effects of electrolytic activation of bubble nucleation ( via the hydrogen evolution reaction, HER) and engineered gold thin-strip microstructures fabricated on silicon substrates. The central hypothesis is that electrochemically generated hydrogen bubbles near the heating surface can significantly increase nucleation site density at low superheat, while patterned gold thin strips surfaces facilitate coalescence-induced bubble departure, further improving boiling performance.To verify this hypothesis, a pool boiling setup was designed and developed. The system employs an embedded cartridge heater inside of the copper block to supply power to the test chip, along with a series vertically arranged thermocouples to accurately determine the heat flux and surface temperature.Using this setup, pool boiling was first measured for plain silicon, plain gold and gold microstrips samples. The boiling curves for pure silicon and flat gold samples are consistent with those reported pool boiling literature. Plain gold surfaces exhibit higher heat transfer coefficients than silicon at low superheat. Attributed to their more hydrophobic characteristics. This patterned gold strip surface demonstrates superior performance compared to both flat plain silicon and flat plain gold at low superheat, likely due to a balance between increased nucleation site density, improved liquid replenishment, and coalescence-induced bubble departure.Finally, the plain gold and gold microstrips samples were tested with and without electrolysis-assisted bubble generation. Electrolysis substantially advances the onset of nucleate boiling ( by approximately 9°C for plain gold) and enhances heat transfer performance for both type of samples. However, for the patterned gold microstrip surfaces, the addition of electrolysis does not result in a further enhancement in heat transfer performance. This suggests that the patterned gold strips surface has already optimized nucleation site density and bubble departure behavior, thereby limiting the additional contribution from electrolysis-assisted bubble generation.Overall, this study introduces a novel method to actively control bubble nucleation and departure dynamics, leading to enhanced boiling heat transfer performance. The findings provide new insights into the coupled effects of surface fabrication and electrochemical activation, with potential applications in advanced thermal management systems, including high-power electronics cooling, energy systems, and phase-change heat transfer technologies.

TITLE: Studies of Self-Organized Broad-Beam Ion Beam Nanopatterning with Real-Time Probes: X-Ray and Laser

ABSTRACT: Broad-beam ion bombardment can lead to the spontaneous formation of a range of nanopatterns on an initially flat surface under certain ion irradiation conditions. However, important fundamental questions remain about the driving forces behind this self-organized pattern formation and how they can be controlled and optimized. This study mainly focuses on utilizing two real-time probes: x-ray and laser, to study different theories of the Ar⁺ ion beam nanopatterning process of Si at room temperature.Recently, a new theory based on the original Bradley-Harper (BH) theory predicts the development of well-ordered ripple patterns near the smoothening to patterning transition threshold. To study the very slow kinetics and the subtle morphology change near-threshold, this study utilized the high surface sensitivity of Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) and the high brilliance of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) to perform real-time GISAXS and X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) based on coherent GISAXS. The real-time GISAXS shows that the near-threshold behavior is likely more complex than current BH-related theories would predict. A unique correlation of average scattering intensity and characteristic correlation time derived from XPCS was observed at the late-stage of ion beam nanopatterning.Stress accumulation as a driving force for pattern formation has been considered a competing theory to the BH-related theories. A Multi laser beam Optical Stress Sensor (MOSS) was utilized to monitor the stress development in real-time during ion beam nanopatterning. In this study, trace amounts of impurities from stainless steel (Fe, Cr, and Ni) were co-deposited on the sample surface during ion bombardment. In this case, it appears that stress development and pattern formation are independent.This study also extended to investigate ion beam nanopatterning of polymer thin films. Although the BH-related theories predict pattern formation on polymers, this experimental study suggests that the stress driven wrinkling effect is at least more prevalent than the BH-modeled pattern formation on polymers.

Title: Kernel as a Shared Object: Dynamic Privilege with Dynamic Linking

Abstract: Uni-kernels have demonstrated that Kcuts, short-cuts from application to kernel code, are a powerful optimization technique in the construction of systems dedicated to a single task. Previous work has suggested that the power of such short-cuts can be naturally extended to a general purpose Operating System (OS) with modest effort. Support for Kcuts within an existing general purpose OS opens the door to a new approach for constructing optimized dedicated runtimes. Rather than conforming to the constraints of a uni-kernel, one can construct a runtime from an unrestricted set of user software while having the freedom to develop and exploit Kcuts for the task-critical binaries and libraries. The design focuses on making Kcuts an additive, optional, execution-time property that can be easily added to an OS kernel, in contrast to being a systemic property that impacts the complete design and implementation of the kernel and user software. In line with this, the OS side implementation only adds a new system call and a small attendant set of supporting kernel changes. The user-side implementation that allows applications to utilise kernel functions and data structures is the focus of this work. It presents a novel application and linkage model that allows for efficient application development and portability. This enables user binaries and libraries to be developed to enact particular kcut-based optimizations while integrating and exploiting the rich existing ecosystem of the OS. Overall, this work demonstrates Kcut optimization can enable performance increases akin to uni-kernel’s and yet be a standard feature of a general purpose OS.

This is a beginner-friendly event designed to provide valuable experience in thinking about entrepreneurship and presenting scientific ideas in an investor setting. Most participants will likely be exploring commercialization for the first time, and research at any stage, even work far from direct commercialization, is welcome.

The competition includes the following events:

- Pitch Deck Info Session - April 14 (Virtual, 6 PM EST): An introductory session led by our judges, providing key guidance on how to structure and develop an effective pitch deck.

- Pitch Deck Evaluation — April 20-24 (Optional): Participants are encouraged to schedule 1-on-1 sessions with our judges to receive constructive feedback on their pitch decks to help refine and strengthen their presentations before the final event.

- Pitch Presentation — April 30: The final round, where participants will present their pitches as if delivering them to potential investors.

These events will be judged by Dr. Robert (Bob) Garces and Dr. Shoshana Das, both of whom previously pursued doctoral training and have since worked in biotech and life science commercialization. They will provide valuable insight and guidance throughout the competition.

Abstract:Tendon injuries are a leading cause of impaired mobility and chronic pain in aging populations, yet the biological mechanisms underlying age-related declines in tendon function remain poorly understood. Dynamic extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling is essential for tendon adaptation to mechanical loading, and its dysregulation is a central feature of chronic tendon degeneration and injury susceptibility. We hypothesize that aging impairs cellular mechanosensing and downstream remodeling responses, leading to compromised load-driven ECM adaptation. Among age-associated cellular changes, cellular senescence is a key candidate mechanism, as senescent cells secrete pro-inflammatory factors that promote matrix degradation. The overall goal of this thesis was to define the molecular mechanisms governing tendon responses to mechanical loading, identify age-related deficits in these adaptations, and determine the contribution of cellular senescence to impaired ECM remodeling. To accomplish this, young, aged, and senescent-induced murine tendon explants were subjected to controlled mechanical loading using ex vivo tensile bioreactors. Graded cyclic strains were applied to establish age-specific response profiles and physiological strain setpoints. We then developed a novel adaptive loading protocol incorporating step changes in strain to isolate mechanical perturbations and identify regulators of load-dependent ECM remodeling. This framework was integrated with genome-wide transcriptomics to identify age-specific impairments in the regulatory programs by which tendons sense and respond to changes in their mechanical environment. Finally, we developed a novel senescent tendon explant model and identified significant dysregulation of ECM remodeling associated with the presence of senescent cell populations. Together, our findings define the mechanistic basis of age-related impairments in tendon mechanobiology and identify cellular senescence as a targetable driver of dysfunction. This work advances understanding of tendon aging and establishes a foundation for targeted therapeutic and rehabilitation strategies to reduce injury risk and improve functional recovery in aging populations.

Abstract:RNA plays central roles in diverse cellular processes, including gene expression and regulation at multiple levels. However, commonly used live-cell RNA imaging tools often require genetic modification of endogenous targets or exogenous probe delivery that complicates the detection process. Technologies that specifically and robustly sense RNA in its native state are thus highly desirable. This dissertation develops two genetically encoded RNA-based biosensors capable of RNA sensing in live prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, respectively. First, I present tSENSE (tRNA-Scaffolded Engineered Nucleic acid Sensor), a class of programmable RNA switches that leverage conditional formation of tRNA scaffolds to improve fluorescence output in live E. coli. I demonstrate tSENSE design generalizability to accommodate diverse fluorogenic aptamer structures, programmability for dual-color sensing, and robustness in detecting functional RNA targets. Second, I introduce STARS (Switchable Tandem Aptamer for RNA Sensing), a class of de novo designed RNA switches that modulate tandem MS2 aptamer structure to enable sequence-specific RNA sensing in live HEK293T cells. I demonstrate both ON and OFF switch configurations with robust fold changes and apply STARS ON switches to detect exogenously expressed mRNA. Together, these two platforms provide distinct and broadly applicable design principles for engineering genetically encoded RNA biosensors, expanding the toolkit for monitoring RNA dynamics in living cells.

Abstract: Human senses define how we perceive and interact with the physical world through vision,hearing, and touch. While robotic systems have achieved super-human capabilities in vision, theyremain far behind human touch perception due to the limited availability of integrated mechanical–electronic sensory architectures.Advanced manufacturing is expanding the design space for multi-scale, three-dimensionalarchitectures, yet the direct co-fabrication of structural, dielectric, conductive, and active materialsremains a fundamental challenge. Unlike biological tissues, which intrinsically integrate sensing,actuation, and control, synthetic materials rarely achieve comparable system-level functionality.In this talk, I will present rapid printing and design strategies that enable rapid, compositionallyprecise assembly of diverse materials into intelligent architected materials. These approachesunlock entirely new behaviors, including custom tailored piezoelectric effects, electro-acousticcoupling, and mechanical logic.The resulting “intelligent solids” embed sensing and actuation directly into their structure,enabling robotic tactile sensing, real-time texture recognition, and distributed force detection atfingertip-scale resolution. These materials function as artificial mechanoreceptors, pointing towarda new class of embodied, adaptive matter for robotics, wearable systems, and human–machineinterfaces.

Bio: Xiaoyu “Rayne” Zheng is a professor in Material Science and Engineering at UC Berkeley,where he directs the Advanced Manufacturing and MetamaterialsLaboratory. He is also a co-director at Berkeley Sensor &Actuator Center and a faculty Scientist at Lawrence BerkeleyNational Laboratory. Rayne is also a cofounder of Sensetics, Inc,providing robotics with a sense of touch. Rayne’s researchfocuses on creating the next-generation functional, structural,electronic and living materials by developing novel additivefabrication techniques for materials with controlled topologies.Prof. Zheng obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering fromBoston University with Prof. Xin Zhang. He has made pioneering contributions to theprogrammable assembly of functional, structural, and electronic materials, printing and processinghighly responsive functional materials for transducers, sensors, and robotics applications. TITLE: Applications of Joule Heating in Amine-Activated Carbon Fibers for Efficient Desorption in Direct Air Carbon Dioxide Capture

ABSTRACT: Developing rapid and more efficient mechanisms for sorbent regeneration is imperative in the continued optimization of direct air capture. Porous sorbents coated with polymeric amines are already capable of rapid absorption of CO₂ with a moderate capacity. However, the current mechanism of regeneration requires external heating of the sorbent, which is both slow and generally inefficient. Here, the project focused on the use of spermine-activated carbon fibers, a novel CO₂ sorbent, as their own heating element via the Joule heating effect. Considering physical properties of these carbon fibers, altering the polymer concentration and the ratio of the polymer mixture (polyacrylonitrile and polyvinylpyrrolidone) was found to have significant a tuning effect on the inner pore architecture and general mechanical strength of the fibers. The optimized fiber balances pore accessibility, pore surface area (the primary property that affects CO₂ absorption capacity), and mechanical strength via these two tuning mechanisms. Electrothermally, the Joule heating effect in this material leads to consistent, rapid, and uniform heating when in ambient air. A multifiber system has similar rapid heating but does not readily reach steady-state in open air continuing to increase in temperature as current is run. This can be optimized in a variety of ways, some of which are tested and some of which are proposed in this work. When used in a dynamic gas sorption system, the multifiber system is capable of rapid regeneration or CO₂ desorption when the Joule heating effect is induced. This approach represents a novel use of Joule heating for a DAC related system, and eliminates many of the system constraints that come from the current method through the use of the CO₂ sorbent itself as its own heating element.

Cybersecurity is often framed as a purely technological domain; however, many major crises stem from ethical misjudgments and leadership failures rather than from technical flaws alone. A single leadership decision can trigger cascading consequences, erode public trust, and disrupt critical services. Despite this reality, ethical leadership remains underdeveloped in cybersecurity education and professional practice.

This interactive workshop introduces a novel Ethical-AI framework designed to strengthen ethical decision-making among current and future cybersecurity leaders. The workshop draws on the Colored Spinning Cogwheels Model (CSCM), which emphasizes contextual awareness, leadership competencies, and strategic action. Participants will engage with an interactive video-based cybersecurity case study enhanced by Large Language Model (LLM) agents. The workshop will also address the critical evaluation of AI-generated recommendations, with particular attention to reducing overreliance and mitigating the risks of hallucinations.

By integrating leadership studies, ethics, artificial intelligence, computer science, mentoring, and cybersecurity, this workshop provides participants with practical tools and conceptual frameworks to enhance trust-centered leadership in complex cyber crises. The workshop is designed for professionals, mentors, and researchers seeking to bridge technical expertise with ethical responsibility across a variety of organizational contexts.

Orly Shapira-Lishchinsky is a Professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Leadership and Head of the Institute for Social Integration, Faculty of Education, BarIlan University, Israel. Her studies highlight ethical leadership and team-based simulations grounded in case studies. To date, she has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and three scholarly books. She has also served as a PI on several competitive research grants funded by Horizon 2020 (European Commission), the Israeli Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, and the Israeli Ministry of Education.

Abstract:Communicating in social settings relies on the ability to focus on a relevant sound amid competing sources—for example, following a dinner conversation at a crowded restaurant. In healthy listeners, volitional, top-down goals and involuntary, bottom-up interruptions interact to prioritize behaviorally important sounds while maintaining situational awareness. In noisy environments, predictive processes can support this effort by helping listeners parse complex auditory scenes. This talk reviews behavioral and neurophysiological research on the brain networks engaged during auditory attention, with a focus on how bottom-up interruptions disrupt top-down focus and how expectation and learning help stabilize it. Together, these findings highlight how top-down and bottom-up attention, memory, and experience interact to support robust communication in everyday environments.

The Oresteia is based on the three plays by Aeschylus—Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers and The Eumenides. They are among the oldest plays in the Western canon and are the only surviving trilogy from the ancient Greek theatre. Due to the epic nature of the story and length of the original text, The Oresteia is rarely performed in its entirety, but McLaughlin’s version of the trilogy has been adapted into one sleek and fast-paced evening of theatre with a modern resonance.

The Oresteia concerns the House of Atreus. The arc of the story begins with Agamemnon’s slaughter of his daughter, an act committed in the name of martial duty and pious sacrifice, but deemed unforgivable by his wife, Clytemnestra—one of the most primal and psychologically complex figures in all of literature. Her act of vengeance in turn sets in motion once more the bloody cycle of that family’s history. The events that follow cast a harsh and penetrating light on any assumptions we like to make about civilization and the nature of human justice.

This two-day guided trip will take you backpacking along the Monadnock- Sunapee Greenway, a route that connects Mt. Monadnock and Mt. Sunapee. We will tackle the northern half between the town of Washington, NH and Mt. Sunapee. The trail is a hidden gem in the northeast and offers rolling terrain, fine viewpoints, and established campsites. Please note that itinerary adjustments may be necessary due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Clothing and equipment can be provided by BU Outdoor Programs upon request. Roundtrip transportation is provided from the BU Fitness and Recreation Center to the trip location.

Since this is an overnight trip, your attendance will be required at a pre-trip meeting with trip leaders to discuss additional details including the itinerary, gear, and meals. Title: Transforming Vulnerability Intelligence with Knowledge Graphs

A bstract: Effective vulnerability management in modern software supply chains demands both accurate characterization of vulnerabilities, their root causes and a clear understanding on how they propagate through complex dependency networks. However, databases that enrich vulnerabilities, such as the National Vulnerability Database (NVD), often contain inconsistent or incomplete metadata such as root cause weakness mappings of vulnerabilities. Likewise, tools commonly employed to produce Software Bills of Materials (SBOM) and perform Software Composition Analysis (SCA) provide only a partial picture of the paths to vulnerabilities in large-scale projects. This thesis addresses both challenges through two complementary contributions.

In Thrust I, we introduce FixV2W, a lightweight approach that leverages longitudinal trends and knowledge graph embeddings to improve vulnerability-weakness mapping accuracy in the NVD without relying on large, semantic data such as descriptions. FixV2W systematically analyzes historical Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) remapping patterns within NVD and leverages hierarchical relationships in the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) database to predict precise CWE mappings for vulnerabilities. We focus on vulnerabilities mapped to prohibited and discouraged weakness classes, and we run extensive experimental evaluation of FixV2W, based on test data set collected between a time frame of over three years. Crafted for each mapping, we construct a set of candidate weaknesses. We propose and compare different approaches for constructing such sets, in terms of accuracy and coverage metrics. We further show that FixV2W significantly improves the performance of ML models relying on NVD data. For instance, for an embedding model geared at uncovering unknown CVE-CWE mappings, FixV2W im- proves the Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR) from 0.174 to 0.608. Last, we show the practical impact of FixV2W by analyzing known exploited vulnerabilities that were mapped to in- valid weakness classes. Considering the Top-10 ranked predictions, the results show that FixV2W predicts the correct CWE mappings for 69% of exploited vulnerabilities that had invalid CWEs before they were exploited.

In Thrust II, we introduce VDGraph, a holistic and queryable dependency-vulnerability graph, to provide a comprehensive view of the vulnerabilities nested within project’s dependencies. We formally analyze the properties of VDGraph, resolve dependency and vulnerability data conflicts, and demonstrate its automation and scalability across over 200 Java, Go, and JavaScript projects using CycloneDX plugins and Google’s OSV-Scanner. Queries on VDGraph expose concentrated risk points, vulnerable transitive dependencies, and vulnerable components that have available fixed versions; while also supporting efficient visualization and patch planning. Unlike existing tools, VDGraph reveals actionable direct dependency updates, resolving vulnerabilities at any depth. Through path enumeration and component depth analysis, developers can strategize in different ways beyond prioritizing vulnerabilities based on their severity scores, and customize queries crafted specifically for their own needs.

Together, FixV2W and VDGraph advance the state of the art in vulnerability intelligence by improving the quality of vulnerability metadata and providing a framework for understanding and remediating risk across the software supply chain.

This semester, the Howard & Sue Bailey Thurman Series will explore the intersections of Black women’s literary expression and Black archival labor. Drawing inspiration from the pioneering archival work of Sue Bailey Thurman—especially her foundational role in establishing the Museum of African American History in Boston—this gathering reflects on how Black women have preserved, interpreted, and created cultural memory.

As Howard Thurman once wrote about the goals of the Howard Thurman Educational Trust: “The way by which this has been done in the history of our trust is to help our own community, the Black community, mine its own past and its own history… to develop more and more a sense of its own root, a sense of its own idiom, a sense of its own heritage… It is this sort of thinking that caused us initially to invest in the Afro-American Museum, which started in Boston during the period when Mrs. Thurman and I were a part of Boston University.”

This Spring event continues that vision—celebrating the legacy of Sue Bailey Thurman while spotlighting contemporary Black women curators, writers, and cultural leaders who carry the work forward.

Dr. Dana A. Williams

Dana A. Williams is professor of African American literature and dean of the Graduate School at Howard University. Prior to her appointment as the first female dean of the Graduate School at Howard, she served as chair of English there for nine years. She is immediate past president of the Modern Languages Association and a former president of the College Language Association (the oldest and largest professional organization in the U.S. for faculty of color who teach languages and literature). She has also served as president of the Toni Morrison Society. Her latest book is Toni at Random: The Iconic Writer's Legendary Editorship. In 2016, she was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as a member of the National Humanities Council. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Humanities Alliance and the American Council of Learned Societies.

Angela T. Tate

Angela T. Tate is a historian and curator whose scholarship centers Black diasporic histories, with expertise in public history, African diaspora studies, and women’s history. Her research focuses on the creation, preservation, and interpretation of archives, highlighting the work of Black women as collectors, organizers, and cultural producers. She is particularly interested in material culture, sound, and performance as forms of historical expression. Angela has held curatorial and collections leadership roles at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and currently serves as Chief Curator and Director of Collections at the Museum of African American History in Boston. She is especially committed to documenting and amplifying the legacies of Black women, including figures like Etta Moten Barnett and Sue Bailey Thurman, whose archival contributions continue to shape understanding of Black women’s cultural history.

Rev. Dr. Shively T. J. Smith.

Rev. Dr. Shively T. J. Smith serves as Associate Professor of New Testament at Boston University School of Theology (Boston, MA). She completed her PhD in New Testament Studies at Emory University, publishing her first book called, Strangers to Family: Diaspora and First Peter’s Invention of God’s Household with Baylor University Press. She is completing a commentary on Second Peter for SBL Press and several articles on Diaspora in the New Testament. As a scholar of New Testament, Smith writes and teaches on all 27 books of the New Testament, but her particular focus is on the traditions of Peter and the General Letters of the New Testament, diaspora studies, approaches to biblical interpretation (hermeneutics), Womanist and African American biblical interpretation, and Howard Thurman.

About the Speakers

Professor Kanako Okuda, MSW, DSW

Dr. Kanako Okuda (she/her) is a social work educator, scholar, and practitioner. She serves as the assistant dean of Practicum Education and is a clinical associate professor at BUSSW. Dr. Okuda is passionate about practicum education and how students create meaning from their learning through service. She views practicum education as a crucial bridge connecting students, social work programs, and the communities they serve, striving to transform students’ experiences by employing innovative tools tailored to diverse learning strengths. Her collaborative research with practicum educators focuses on improving students’ practicum outcomes.

To address student anxiety, Dr. Okuda developed www.fieldanxiety.com, a widely adopted resource that helps students embrace vulnerability as a tool for growth. In 2020, she was selected as a Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) Project at the University of Calgary, supported by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Dr. Okuda is also a founding member of the Practicum Education Directors; member of the “Voting Is Social Work” campaign, which mobilizes voter participation through practicum education.

As a practicing clinical social worker, Dr. Okuda serves hard-to-reach populations via telemental health services. She began her career in child welfare and later worked as a pediatric oncology social worker at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Okuda holds a BSW from Lehman College, an MSW from Columbia University, and a DSW from Rutgers University. Her scholarship includes social justice, practicum education, and health social work.

Mia Parra

Parra is a BUSSW Master of Social Work student focusing on macro practice. As someone who is legally blind, she brings lived experience into her professional work in disability services, inclusion training, and community-based programming.

Miku Hayashida

Hayashida is a BUSSW Master of Social Work student. As a wheelchair user and as a social worker, she is deeply passionate about being an advocate for marginalized communities, especially disabled people. She values her lived experiences in the U.S. and Japan which gives her a cross-cultural perspective.

They are among the oldest plays in the Western canon and are the only surviving trilogy from the ancient Greek theatre. Due to the epic nature of the story and length of the original text, The Oresteia is rarely performed in its entirety, but McLaughlin’s version of the trilogy has been adapted into one sleek and fast-paced evening of theatre with a modern resonance.

The 2026 International White Hat Conference addresses the growing need for coordinated global readiness to prevent, investigate, and prosecute cybercrime and digital offenses associated with large‑scale international events by gathering law enforcement agencies, prosecutorial offices, experts in cybersecurity and AI, cryptocurrency investigators, industry professionals, policymakers, and academic researchers from around the world and harnessing their collective expertise.

Through evidence-based research, prosecutorial and investigative case studies, and cross‑sector dialogue, the conference focuses on emerging technologies, threat intelligence, legal and regulatory frameworks, and operational strategies to strengthen cybersecurity preparedness and digital crime prevention efforts.
